Cost of Living Support

The British Red Cross Support at Home service provides essential short-term assistance for individuals returning home from hospital. This service ensures a safe and supported transition during the first 24 to 72 hours post-discharge and may continue for up to 6 weeks, depending on individual needs and eligibility.
Following an assessment, the British Red Cross team will work collaboratively with the individual to establish tailored goals. Support may include:
- Transport to and from medical appointments
- Assistance with everyday tasks (e.g., prescription collection, grocery shopping)
- Pendant alarm installation (complimentary for six weeks; optional continuation at £34.65/month)
- Key safe installation (£66 one-time fee)
- Signposting to relevant local services and organisations
- Confidence-building and well-being support
- Assistance with practical matters such as arranging payment of household bills

All volunteers are fully trained to provide both practical and emotional support, empowering individuals to regain independence and confidence.

The ongoing cost-of-living crisis has seen demand on food banks grow. From Shropshire Food Poverty Alliance (SFPA), research shows 80% of those using the food bank has a long term health condition or disability. Yet, we know that benefits in Shropshire are going unclaimed.
With an estimated £24 million in Universal Credit, £9 million in Council Tax Support, and £8 million in Pension Credit unclaimed in Shropshire every year.
These benefits could make the difference to households forced to rely on food banks. The strong link between health and food bank usage creates an opportunity to work together.
Benefits can be a complex and daunting area. Yet, the SFPA is encouraging people to check their benefits entitlement.
Many people may be missing out on benefits they did not think they would be eligible for. It is important to remember that 1.3m of the people claiming Unviersal Credit are working.
People can check their entitlement online using Turn2us, or entitledto. The SFPA has also produced the 'Worrying About Money' leaflet. This leaflet lays out an easy-to-follow direction for support.
